Do you want a great, natural-looking smile? Consider porcelain veneers from Washington, DC dentist, Dr. Shakrokh Soltani. This cosmetic dental treatment covers chips, cracks, odd shape and dark discolorations–artfully and permanently.
What is a porcelain veneer?
Dentists call it a dental laminate, too. It’s crafted from fine ceramic and covers the front side of a tooth marred by stains, hairline cracks, chips or even odd configuration and size. Tooth-shaped and colored to blend in with neighboring teeth, the DC porcelain veneer adds strength and sparkle to a less than perfect smile.
Washington, DC porcelain veneers improve healthy teeth–that is, those lacking decay or multiple restorations, such as fillings. Dr. Soltani evaluates prospective veneer patients by oral exam, digital x-rays and other imaging. He takes photos and may show the patient a computerized rendering of his or her new smile.
The porcelain veneer procedure
Dr. Soltani prepares the patient’s teeth, takes oral impressions and places veneers in just 2 visits. To prepare tooth surfaces, he removes a thin vertical slice of enamel (½ mm) from each tooth. This procedure typically needs no anesthetic of any kind and makes space in the mouth for the laminates.
An outside lab creates the veneers. A master ceramist makes a model of the patient’s teeth and gums and sculpts each veneer to according to this model and the dentist’s treatment plan.
On the return visit, Dr. Soltani etches the patient’s teeth with a special bonding agent. He applies tooth colored adhesive which may be adjusted for the right shade of color. He places the dental veneers individually and hardens the cement with a curing light to secure the bond. After some adjustments for bite and shape, the procedure is complete. Most patients adjust to their laminates very quickly and experience little to no tooth or gum sensitivity afterwards.
Caring for your new smile is easy
Veneers last for many years when patients brush and floss daily and also come to My Face My Smile for 6-month check-ups and cleanings. While DC veneers are durable and stain resistant, patients should treat them gently.
So, individuals should wear night time mouthguards if they grind their teeth, and they must avoid hard foods, such as peanut brittle and ice, and biting non-foods, such as pencil tops and fingernails.
Veneers are versatile
Dentists often refer to porcelain veneers as “instant orthodontics” because they cover smile gaps, mild overlapping and other issues that braces address. Additionally, Dr. Soltani uses laminates with other cosmetic dental services, such as teeth whitening or bonding, to complete a smile makeover.
